By the time you receive this newsletter I will have returned from a demonstration on the Mall near the Capitol. I’m not planning on getting arrested this time. This gathering of more than 100 faith leaders called on Congress to pass the American Jobs Plan. As you know, the Plan has bold investments in energy & transportation, a 100% clean energy standard, and a commitment to environmental justice.
This week’s Parsha, Korach, is about the rebellion of Korach and other leaders against Moses and Aaron. Rebellions against tyrannical and unjust leaders are certainly something we would support. However, rebellions that are grounded in greed, self interest and no clear vision for the future are bound to fail.
We are now witnessing such a rebellion in the halls of Congress (more so the Senate). More than 100 faith leaders on the Mall today support the vision of this new administration. We support it because it is morally right, it is “for the sake of heaven.”
The name Korach means “frozen.” Tragically, we have too many Korachs creating stumbling blocks to addressing social and climate needs. What would it take to warm their hearts and thaw their frozen consciences? Should we send cards of love and healing?
On another note, we are now heavy into our JUNE APPEAL! Our work in the community is based on serving the spiritual and life cycle needs of our members and the nonaffiliated. We are also dedicated to responding to social and environmental issues with a progressive voice. Please read our Annual Report.
We need your support.
With hope and blessings,
Reb David
